Happy Offbeat Holidays!

December 21st, 2009 by Kristina May

It figures that at a travel guide company, all of our writers have gone on vacation for a holiday treat! Zain returns from his Southeast Asian excursion this week, so stay tuned for an update from him. I’m leaving tomorrow to spend Christmas in New York City, but wanted to share these great photos of San Francisco’s most photographed bridge before I go. Fellow SF resident Rob Kroenert (Wiggum03 on Flickr) has captured some stunning images of the Golden Gate Bridge swathed in fog. Consider it a bit of eye-candy(cane) from us to you for the holidays.

I’m a huge fan of these photos because I didn’t realize how foggy San Francisco was until moving here. Many travel guides show the Golden Gate Bridge on sunny days, which is quite deceiving. The first time I visited the city I brought sunglasses and shorts, and not much else. The cloudy, mild weather baffled me. “California is supposed to be sunny and gorgeous! What is this?” From the amount of tourists I saw in November lamenting the decision to leave their jackets at home, I gather this is still going on. It must support our fair city’s lucrative sweatshirt industry, for I can see no other reason for the deception.

Seriously though, the fog can be beautiful if you’re prepared for it. Wear layers when you visit San Francisco, and drive across the bridge to the Marin Headlands. Stunning views guaranteed, fog or no.

You can see more of Rob’s photography here, and even buy some prints. Happy Holidays, everyone!
