Would You Like the Zero-Gravity Suite?

November 5th, 2009 by Victoria Nguyen

If the world doesn’t end in 2012, there’ll be another event for earthlings to look forward to: the opening of the galaxy’s first ever “space hotel.” That’s pretty epic, you guys.

According to Reuters, the Barcelona-based architects of The Galactic Suite Space Resort have confirmed that they’re on track for the hotel’s launch date in just under three years. For a hefty $4.4 million, you can start making reservations for your three-night stay in space. Included in the package is an eight-week stay at a tropical island spaceport, where guests will receive astronaut training in a relaxing environment.

Now here’s what to expect from your space stay. After the day and a half trip in a Russian-built rocket, you will dock into the resort, a singular pod that will orbit above the earth at 280 miles. Travelling at the average speed of 30,000 km/h, you’ll travel the world every 80 minutes and observe the sunrise 15 times – all while floating in zero gravity. Let’s say it all together now – COOOOL.

The multi-billion dollar project began in 2007, and according to the Galactic Suite Web site, its mission is to provide the general public with “the most thrilling and transcendent experience ever.” I believe it. So far, Reuters reports that more than 200 people have expressed interest in visiting the space resort and at least 43 people have already reserved a spot – are you next?
