A Feast Fit for Rat-Kings?

November 25th, 2009 by Kristina May

This time of year, everyone has decadent feasts on their mind. But if you’re traveling in Asia for the holidays, you might want to check out something a little…well, grosser.

The Modern Toilet is a chain of restaurants originally from Taiwan, but rapidly expanding into China and other places throughout Asia. As you can see, everything there is a toilet – plates, chairs, and even the sinks in the very clearly marked restrooms.

toileticecreamSo, why toilets? Picture yourself drinking Mountain Dew out of a urinal-shaped cup. Disgusting, right? But picture someone else drinking it, and you have to admit that’s pretty funny. Despite the gross-out factor, reviewers rave that the restaurant itself is very clean, and the food delicious. Neat-freaks might have to grit their teeth at the fact that they’re sitting down to a meal atop toilets (lids down, mind you), but the restaurant does offer folding chairs for those who find the bathroom humor overwhelming. Unfortunately, there is no alternative menu to avoid such creative dessert descriptions as, “bloody poop” (strawberry ice cream) or “green dysentery” (kiwi ice cream). Still, it’s worth a visit if you’re looking for something offbeat and decidedly non-fancy. Most meals are priced under $6 USD, which puts the Modern Toilet in the “cheap eats” category. Judging by the photos, you can still make quite a feast to satisfy your inner glutton.

Happy Thanksgiving!
