Celebrating Independence Day Outside the USA

July 2nd, 2009 by Kay Dover

The thing about Independence Day is that it happens right smack in the middle of prime out-of-the-country vacation season. While homebound citizens are busy barbecuing, sporting shorts made from the American flag, and oohing and aahing at fireworks displays to the tune of our national anthem, many of us find ourselves in places where the 4th of July is just another day.

If you’re like me, you won’t let that stop you from using this great excuse to party! Here are some tips for finding July 4th celebrations, wherever you may be…

sparklersLocate your peeps – Get in touch with the local expat community. They’re sure to have a BBQ, picnic or fireworks planned, and you might make a few friends while you’re at it! Use the ExpatFinder search engine to find the Americans in your area, or check out Transitions Abroad for a list of sites and resources for expats worldwide.

Ask what your government can do for you – Visit the US State Department website and search for U.S. embassies and consulates, then contact the nearest one to find out what sort of patriotic festiveness they’ve got up their sleeves. These events often require you to register in advance, so don’t just show up an expect a burger.

Get some grub – Ask around at local American-owned restaurants and bars, or those that cater to Americans. You’re bound to find some drink specials, at the very least! If you’re in a major city, check out a Hard Rock Cafe or a T.G.I.Friday’s. Both chains have a whole bunch of international locations and have been known to put on celebrations for the 4th.

D.I.Y. – Depending on where you are, consumer fireworks may be totally legal and fairly easy to come by. Research your local laws, then get yourself some sparklers and ooh and aah to your heart’s content! Find a park or picnic area with barbecues, or build a bonfire if the local beach allows. If you can’t find a market that carries hot dogs and potato salad, improvise with some fresh local fare. Grilled fish and mangoes can be just as good! Wear red, white and blue, sing ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game’ and quote your favorite parts of the Constitution… It’ll feel just like home!
