Camel Cup 2009 Arrives (Or Does It?)
July 9th, 2009 by Victoria Nguyen
No, the camel cup isn’t a crotch protector for the ladies. Nor is it a new racecourse for Nintendo’s Mario Kart. The Lions Imparja Camel Cup is actually the fun and silly camel race that takes every July in Alice Springs, Australia.
If the horse could be considered the well-mannered, argyle-wearing intellect, then the camel would be the drooling, mumbling, drunk on public transportation. Graceless, unpredictable, and likely to spit on you – you can imagine how amusing a camel race can get! Here’s an official video from the race organizers:
And an unofficial video of a camel who just didn’t want to follow the rest of the crowd:
This year’s popular spectator event takes place this Saturday at Blatherskite Park and will consist of nine different races throughout the day. The feature race, the XXXX Gold Lions Camel Cup will begin with up to 15 camels at the starting line, with no promises that all 15 will ever make it to the finish line. The Camel Cup’s festivities, which first began in 1979, will also feature belly dancers and food stalls. All funds raised will go to local charities.
