Top Places To Get Your Booze On In Bristol
April 10th, 2009 by Laura Pring
We asked Laura Pring in our editorial team what her favorite places to drink are in Bristol, and she shared the following secrets:
Hotel du Vin- The Sugar House, Narrow Lewins Mead, Bristol, ph+44 117 925 5577.
This is predominantly a hotel but it has an excellent restaurant and bar. The name pretty much says it all, ‘Hotel of Wine’ and as you can guess they have a pretty extensive wine menu. The best wine I have ever had came from this place…unfortunately it was so good that I had too much of it and have forgotten its name! It’s not the cheapest place and certainly would not do for your Sunday night boozer, but you really get what you pay for, tasty drinks in great surroundings.
Goldbrick House- 69 Park Street, Bristol, ph+44 117 945 1950.
This is one of my favorite bars in Bristol and although it is a bit on the swankier side, it is surprisingly not that over priced. The bar is laid out over the top floor of a traditional Georgian building and spans four interconnecting rooms. It has a intimate vibe as it creates the feeling that you are drinking in someone’s house. The décor reflects this mood as there are contemporary yet comfy armchairs and sofas dotted around.
The Duke-45 King St, Bristol, ph+44 117 927 7137.
Famous for its New Orleans Style jazz nights, this pub is located on the cobbled streets of Bristol near the waterfront. For those with vivid imaginations, it will transport you back to Victorian Bristol. The inside is not lavishly decorated but serves its purpose well; letting people sit down, have a cheap pint and enjoy live music. In the summer it’s a great place to drink as right outside are tons of picnic tables where you can have fun in the sun.

The Bell- 16-18 Hillgrove Street Stokes Croft, Bristol, ph (0117) 909 6612.
A real old man local pub hidden in Stokes Croft . You will only know about this place if 1: you live next door, 2: you have been taken there by someone else or 3: you stumble across it whilst lost. It’s really small inside with only two rooms, kitted out with typical English pub decor and …that’s it. It’s simplicity and Englishness and not to mention the cheap drinks on offer are what makes this pub great .
Cosies-34 Portland Square, Bristol, ph+44 117 942 4110.
They say if you haven’t been to Cosies, you haven’t been to Bristol. In the basement of 34 Portland Square, it has a great reputation as a cool bar with cool people. Containing a low ceiling, arched brick room with a dj booth in the corner, it get crowded easily as the wide range of people from the students and middle aged couples to the Rastas in the corner, are all bumping and grinding with one another, leading to one hell of a night.
The Apple-Welsh Back, Bristol, ph+44 117 925 3500.
A floating cider bar! A converted old Dutch Barge where the decks have been transformed into seating areas where you can sit and lull with the water whilst enjoying some of the West Country’s finest ciders. A really unique place to grab a drink. Just be wary of what cider you are drinking as some are rather lethal and could lead to a man over board situation.
